Della Valle Bernheimer
Throughout the growth of Della Valle Bernheimer (DB)’s practice, they have approached potential projects with the query, “Can it be built?”, or at the very least “what is the likelihood that the project will result in tangible structures or artifacts?” For DB, fabrication is the most useful test of conceptualism.
Devoted practitioners, DB have proactively expanded the rules of business development, cultivating relationships with developers and independent sources of financing, giving them a greater degree of control over their projects in general, and increasing the likelihood of realization. DB have acted as developers for both affordable housing and market-rate construction, and have engaged the field of product design, creating custom furniture for several real estate development properties, as well as developing a custom modular furniture system for their own office. The diversity of DB’s practice is rooted in a constant and proactive effort to seek out and invent projects for themselves.
DB’s projects are devised through research and a strong philosophical stance that no project should mimic one that came before it. While technical strategies and solutions may re-appear, each project’s 'parti' is inherently related to its unique specifics and differences.
While not an earth-shattering pronouncement in itself, this lack of an overarching signature is certainly liberating to the firm. It breeds variety. DB’s imprint reveals itself in a consistent sensitivity to material, to invention, to utility, and to execution. DB’s mantra: consistency, not homogeneity.
